Construction 043

Ostinata

Algorithmic composition for MIDI piano

(2014, total duration: *ca.* 13'40")

Programme Note

This Construction is essentially composed from a specific algorithm generating rhythmical *ostinati* highlighted with accents and syncopations. These ostinati are implemented in varied numbers of superposed layers, and on different complementary registers or note sets.

In contrast, relatively free *canti* are adjoined, mostly issued from an algorithm making use of the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence, which I have used extensively in my preceding Construction 042, Due cose, mille cose (2013). This sequence is most commonly named Thue-Morse. It was rediscovered many times in different contexts. The most famous works are by Eugène Prouhet (1817-1867) in 1851, Axel Thue (1863-1922) in 1906, and Marston Morse (1892-1977) in 1921.

This Construction has not been performed in its original state in 2014, and has been revised in 2023. It comprises two movements:

  I — 6'37"

 II — 7'00"
